NIT Students are likely to be exempted from appearing GATE 2014

The students of National Institutes of Technology (NIT) who want to pursue the Ph. D. from IITs are likely to be exempted from the respective qualifying exam – GATE 2014, said the sources.
The IITs are planning to offer this direct admission opportunity to the meritorious students of other top institutes also.
However, the scheme will be available only for those engineering graduates from NITs who, in terms of academic performance, are among the top 10 per cent of students of their respective batches. Besides, they must complete their eighth (final) semester at the IITs.

This decision has been taken keeping in mind the existing faculty crunch in IITs and the situation that most of the engineering graduates refer to take up jobs rather than preparing for GATE and eventually pursuing higher studies.
